There were rats, one could get trench-foot (from the moisture), you could be buried alive in an explosion, and many contracted lice (from rats) as well.
i understand its to stop rats gnawing away at it. if rats eat the cable, it needs repairing,, prevention is better than cure.
Unless you live in somewhere highly populated by BLACK rats (not brown rats) you don't have much chance of getting it, as they are the ones the fleas lived on. The black plague nowadays is also cured by antibiotics.
It was terrible, spending all your time either in a dirty trench with rats or up on the front line fighting for your country.
