The destroyer USS Maddox was on a DeSoto patrol (Intelligence gathering missions) and Nasty boats were moving about, the North Vietnamese Navy was reacting to those activities. So it's a case of "he said she said."

As for the two communist attacks; the 02 August attack was real, North Viet Navy torpedo boats actually did fire torpedos and automatic cannons at the Maddox...and Maddox did fire hundreds of 5 inch shells at the boats. So it was a naval battle alright.

The second attack on 04 August may have been "Tonkin Ghosts" (radar ghosts). Both the USN and NVN pretty well agree on that post war.
