Samuel Adams and John Hancock hid from General Gage in Lexington, Massachusetts. They sought refuge there to evade capture as tensions escalated between the American colonists and British authorities. Their hiding place became significant as it was near the site of the first battles of the American Revolutionary War.
John Hancock was born on January 23, 1737, in Braintree, Massachusetts. He spent much of his early life in this town, which is now part of Quincy. After the death of his father, Hancock was raised by his wealthy uncle, who later adopted him and brought him to live in Boston, where he became involved in business and politics.

Paul Revere was stopped on the road to Concord outside of Lexington and his horse taken from him. At that point the British hadn't reached Lexington and when they did they were met by 77 colonists on the town green. There was no patriot leader taken that day by the British other than Revere earlier in the night.
The British troops moved on Lexington and Concord in an attempt to seize a reported arms cache, and to attempt the capture of John Hancock and Samuel Adams. The information obtained by the British concerning the existence of the arms and the whereabouts of Hancock and Adams was good, but the two patriots were warned of the British movement by Paul Revere, and the colonials chose to stand and fight rather than retire, thus starting the war for American Independence.

Samuel Adams was a first cousin of John Adams. He was a very active revolutionary very much before others joined him. He helped organize active resistance to English rule, set up lines of communication, and helped organize militia. He may have helped plan and carry out some raids on the English including perhaps the Boston Tea Party. He was a fiery politician in Massachusetts and Boston Town Meetings and was a member of the Continental Congress.
