The military troops stationed throughout the South to enforce the Radical Reconstruction Act were deployed by the federal government under the authority of President Ulysses S. Grant. This was done to ensure the protection of freed slaves and to maintain order during the Reconstruction period following the American Civil War.
President Andrew Johnson plan of reconstruction was based upon a desire to punish the southern states for causing so much bloodshed and suffering during the war The radical Republicans who had the majority in the Congress.
The radical wing of the Republican Party were termed as such because of their insistence that slavery be abolished without regard to what the consequences might be. They were in fact abolitionists. Moderate Republicans and moderate Democrats understood that an immediate end to slavery might have unpleasant social and economic consequences. During the US Civil War they demanded that the war was fought to end slavery. Moderates sought to unify the Union first and deal with slavery later.
President Andrew Jackson restricted African American rights during reconstruction. Blacks were excluded from southern politics. Radical Reconstruction occurred from 1867 to 1877
