Taiwan was liberated by US military forces (navy, air force, etc.) during the period of WWII in the Pacific, hence the United States has the responsibility to conduct the military occupation of Taiwan. However, the Republic of China military forces under Chiang Kai-shek were sent to Taiwan in place of the US military forces. (See General Order No. 1 of Sept. 2, 1945). In this way, the ROC has become a proxy occupying force of the United States of America in conducting the military occupation of Taiwan. Unfortunately, this arrangement has continued up to the present day.
US occupation did NOT affect Japan DURING the war, but after it, since the war ended with the occupation of Japan. So, the occupation denied Japan of many soldiers, military facilities etc, rendering it quite useless militarily. Afterwards, the US made immigration to and from Japan easier, enriching both countries. That is what happened in most sectors, technology, science, industry, the American 'way' was introduced, while Japan developed on these principles.
