Yes, Napoleon stands among the first rank of the Great Commanders. Primarily what make him thus is his leadership, in civil terms as well as military, and this is rare indeed. Napoleons years of power really last from 1796 to 1809 in which he humbles all opponents, Austria, Prussia & Russia, in continental Europe. And then come the years of decline: Spain & Russia are his undoing. His Marshals are defeated in Spain, Victor, Soult, Massena, Marmont, Jourdan, none can contain the, initially small, consistant British threat posed by Wellington: Russia despite Borodino, a massive bloodbath, allows him to march on Moscow, only to find the place essentially deserted. The predation of Cossacks & the winter decimates his Grande Armee. After Leipzig, another massive set piece 3 day affair of slaughter, combining Prussian Austrian, Swede (Commanded by former Marshal of France, Bernadotte) & many others, Napoleons fortunes are briefly resurgent in the defence of France itself, but it is all too late now & he is exiled to Elba. The Hundered Days, from April to June 1815 is a wonderful vignette, a great campaign which, of course the French should win against the British & Prussians: Waterloo should have been the great mans most famous victory, but he blows it. No ! it's no good blaming Ney, Grouchy & others, or the weather for that matter, had the French won Napoleon would have grabbed the laurels for himself: Another great man, Wellington, snatched them from him by the persistance of his defence, & the help of Blucher. Make no mistake, no Blucher, no British victory... The French win. Vive l'Empereur

Modern history is the considered the time after the "middle ages", beginning around 1500.
