Missouri was officially a Union State during the Civil War but was a slave border state fraught with "brother against brother" and "neighbor against neighbor" animosity. Many young men left home and joined guerrilla type bands of Confederate raiders, the most famous of these being Quantrill's raiders, who were Confederate supporters. They led bloody raids against Union sympathizers throughout Missouri and into Kansas.

The U. S. Jefferson Barracks, was a major Union armory and disembarkation point for Union troops with it's strategic location on the Mississippi River south of St. Louis and it's railroad access. (Today, Jefferson Barracks is comprised of a National Cemetery, VA Hospital and Military Museum on its spacious grounds.)
