The barons were the leaders of the troops that fought for him and won him the Kingdom of England at The Battle of Hastings (his fellow Normans). He rewarded their loyalty by giving them baronies (replacing the conquered Saxon barons). As the new barons were seen by the English as invaders (they brought new ways and were generally harsh in suppressing the people), they supported each other and were loyal to King William because they needed his support and because they were grateful to him for their new positions. Thus his barons gave him firm control of his new realm.
