What is today known as "Oak Alley Plantation" was originally formed by Jacques T. Roman when he purchased the land from his family, built the historic Big House in 1839, and named the plantation "Bon Sejour." After the US Civil War, the property went through about a dozen different owners who would have various names for the property. When the Stewart family purchased the property in 1925, they restored the declining mansion, and started a cattle ranch which they originally named "Oak Alley Farms". Later, the property was repurposed for sugar cane planting again, and the 'Oak Alley Plantation' became its name. The original Oak Alley Plantation consisted of about 1200 acres of land, including Big House, Alley of Oaks, sugar cane fields, swamp, a pond, barns, grazing fields, railroad and some roads. The Big House and Alley of Oaks is now owned and managed by the non-profit Oak Alley Foundation, which owns just the 25 acres surrounding the historic area of the property (Big House, Trees, and historical exhibits). The surrounding property is owned by the Stewart family's descendents and is a working sugar cane plantation, restaurant, inn, and residential area.
