While the United States and France were allies during WW2, it's important to note that France already controlled Vietnam and the surrounding area. Known as French-IndoChina, France already had troops, civil administrators, educators, and government officials in place; it made sense for the US to support it's ally.
The Vietnam War was primarily fought between North Vietnam, supported by the Soviet Union and China, and South Vietnam, supported by the United States and its allies. The conflict arose out of the division of Vietnam following the First Indochina War and the subsequent Geneva Accords in 1954. The war lasted from 1955 to 1975 and resulted in the reunification of Vietnam under communist rule.
The Republic of South Vietnam did not benefit; they became extinct. The allies that supported RVN gained valuable military experience; especially in the field of aerial super-sonic jet warfare.

ARVN stands for "Army of the Republic of Viet Nam." This was the South VietNam Army that the U.S. and other allies supported until April, 1973 - when all other forces withdrew from South Vietnam, turning their military equipment over to the ARVN.
