Juan Ponce de León (1474-1521) was a Spanish explorer and conquistador, who was the first appointed Spanish governor of the Puerto Rico colony (San Juan Bautista) in 1510, having led official expeditions to the island. Three years later, in 1513, he sailed to the North American coast, where he sighted and explored Florida, giving it its modern name. He at first thought it was another large island. After returning to Spain, he commanded an expedition to establish a permanent Florida colony in 1521, but was seriously wounded in a battle with the native tribes and died soon afterward.
