Slavery had been an integral part of the Southern plantation system since before the American Revolutionary War. The South became dependent upon the slave system, however, hindsight tells us that if slavery had never existed in North America, free workers would have worked in the cotton and tobacco fields. The South could not see that the plantations could be worked without slavery.

yes because it helped all slaves to be free and it helped them to start a new life That can't be true because a whole bunch of slaves died in the war as did a horrible number of those who were not slaves. I suggest slavery was doomed to fail for both economic and moral reasons. Slavery only worked economically in certain settings, particularly labor-intensive plantation farming. In many parts of the world, such as the north, slavery didn't work economically. In addition, by the time of the civil war, strong abolitionist forces were emerging that were pressing the moral arguments against slavery. Surely, the war was justified, if necessary to end slavery, but it was America's worst tragedy, if slavery would have collapsed without the war. Former slaves and their descendants have suffered terribly for almost 150 years as a result of the hostilities of the war. Can anyone show that slaves and their descendants are better off because of the war? I don't think that any war is necessary. If humanity was a united race then there wouldn't be any wars, and everybody could talk it out. But the world isn't that sweet. War will come. I'm afraid that war can't be stopped. but getting back to the question, I think that slavery wasn't going to continue for much longer anyway. I think that someone would have stepped up and said "slavery is wrong and we need to stop."
