During the 1858 Lincoln - Douglas debates, Senator Douglas charged that the Republican Party aimed at creating an abolitionist party and one that believed in racial equality. This accusation was false. In 1858 the Republican Party was hostile to slavery and its main stream members such as Abraham Lincoln were not bent on the idea of racial equality. By confining slavery to where it already existed, however, was intended to stem its spread and place the institution of slavery on a course of ultimate extinction.Lincoln believed in 1858 that this natural death of slavery might take as long as 100 years.

It should be noted that in 1858, the Democrat Party was the largest and only national party in the US at that time. Democrats stretched from Florida to Maine. No one was predicting a four way race presidential race in 1860.

In order to grow and spread its influence, the main stream Republicans understood that moderation was needed to carve out a permanent niche in US politics.
