It is more of a Horror one, since it features a murder, a ghost and some suicides. One of the reasons it is frequently chosen for study in school is that there are practically no women in it, and therefore no sexual issues of any kind at all. It is therefore the furthest thing from a romance in the conventional sense. Nor is it a Romance in the specialized sense in which that word is used by Shakespeare scholars since it was not written towards the end of his career, does not feature the separation and subsequent reconciliation of families, and does not have a fairy tale or legendary type plot. It also has a tragic rather than a comic ending.
