No it was not. China spent from 1927 until the Second World War and after it until 1949 in a brutal, costly civil war that left many homeless and fleeing from Mao's armies as they neared victory.
Communism (a classless stateless society based on production for use and democratic control) has never existed in China.
There were no such thing as communism in ancient China due to them having dynasties, therefore leading to a centralized government, but you can't call it communism.
Actually, every dynasties has parts that were peaceful, and some parts that are not peaceful at all.
The United states confronted Communism in East Asia after the Korean War with fear that communism would be intertwined to other countries. They entered the Korean Conflict shortly after world war 2.
Though China is a communist government, it is not as bad is it is portrayed. When the Russians brought communism to China, it was meant to follow the original purpose (Yes, communism can be good if you apply it in the right way). However, China has become more of a capitalist country than that of a communist one. There are less harsh working conditions and people are free to an open market.
China began the transition to state capitalism in 1949. There cannot be a Communist country, as Communism (a classless stateless society based on production for use) can only be introduced at a global level.
