Rhode Island valued education. They had public schools and private tutors for kids. Most kids didn't have tutors and went to the public schools in the middle of the small towns they would live in.

In the 1700s, education was pretty similar in all the colonies, including the one which has become our smallest state in area, and largest state in name: Rhode Island And The Plantation Provinces. Free public education really didn't get much of a start until 1787, when the Northwest Territory was set up. Section 16 of each township (36 sections, in theory) was set aside in the Northwest Territory to fund public schooling. In the other colonies, it was pretty much a catch-as-catch-can thing. Parents who could afford it had their kids schooled. Those who couldn't, didn't - and there were a number who didn't think it particularly important that their kids got any more than the very basics. Much education was vocational in nature - a child would be apprenticed to a master and learn a trade. That is, for instance, how Ben Franklin became a printer. Paul Revere became a silversmith, and John Paul Jones became a sailor. Those of wealth inherited land and/or slaves, or a trading business. The children of slaves were often unschooled, only useful for physical labor or other drudgery. The educated man might set himself up as a schoolmaster. Parents would pay a tuition each term for each child that was enrolled in the school. Typically, the classroom would contain children of varying ages and learning levels, and it was anticipated that children would be exposed to material three times - a preview, by hearing older children being taught by the schoolmaster, a second time when they would be taught by the schoolmaster, and a third time when they would tutor younger students in the same material. School master was generally one of the poorer-paid occupations. There were no licensing requirements for teachers and no accreditation organizations for schools. Teaching was often an occupation chosen by those who were not capable of engaging in more strenuous activity. The McGuffey Reader series was not available until the 1800s, but the New England Primer was. The Bible was also used as a textbook. Students were expected to learn the mathematics of business and industry as well as simple arithmetic. That is, if an invoice for $70.00 is paid promptly to earn a 2% discount, how much is due? How many bushels of corn would there be in a wagon 30" wide, 7.5' long, and 20" deep? How many cord of wood is in a pile 18' long, 5' tall, 20" wide? How many ton of coal would it take to fill a bin that's 10' x 18', and 5' deep? The first American dictionary, by Webster, wasn't published until 1806, so spelling was not standardized, but students were taught a certain amount of geography and history, again depending on how many years of schooling they got.
