He became a military advisor to Antiochus III, the Seleucid king in Syria who was preparing for was against Rome. He was the commander of the Seleucid fleet in two naval battles against Rome. When Antiochus was defeated, He became a military advisor of Prusias I, the king of Bithynia (in north-western Turkey) who was at war with the neighbouring Kingdom of Pergamon, an ally of Rome. He won a naval battle and two land battles.
