The ancient Roman Empire was constantly at war or were involved in battles for most of its existence. Civil wars were the most damaging ones for the empire as Roman soldiers and leaders were pitted against each other.

Because of the size and long history of Rome, the many peoples they had conquered were sometimes in rebellion against Rome. These rebellions were usually short ones.

The size of the empire also meant it had long borders to protect. Incursions by tribal peoples or organized empires such as the Parthian empire were always a threat on Rome's borders.
