In 1968, Germany was split into two countries; the city of Berlin was split correspondingly. Each country had its own capital. These were:The German Democratic Republic, also known as East Germany. Their capital was East Berlin.The Federal Republic of Germany, also known as West Germany. Their capital was Bonn.In 1989-1990, East Germany collapsed and merged with West Germany. East and West Berlin were also reunited, and Berlin eventually became the capital of the reunited Germany (which is still formally called the Federal Republic of Germany).
The American name for West Germany was 'WEST GERMANY'. In the German language it is 'West Deutschland'. By comparison ' East Germany was the same words. However in the German language it was ' Ost Deutschland'.
After World War II, the eastern half of Germany was called the German Democratic Republic (GDR), commonly known as East Germany. After World War 2, Germany was split in half by the occupying forces. You had the Western Allies (USA, UK and France) occupy West Germany while the Soviet Union occupied East Germany. Tensions between the USA and the Soviet Union, West and East, Capitalism and Communism, etc, etc, led to these two occupied zones becoming more independent from one another until they split.
