The clothes of the lower classes were made of cotton. The Middle and Upper classes wore cotton clothes for everyday purposes and materials such as silks and satins from China and the Middle East, and furs from the Americas when dressing more formally. Generally speaking, the more wealthy population would wear formal garb more often, as clothes were used heavily to indicate status.
