encouraged a questioning of attitude
The Catholic Church's ability to influence European politics declined.
The renaissance brought in more philosophy, logic/reasoning, and science. The philosophers of the Reformation told people to stand up for what they think is right and to stand up for what you believe in. These novel ideas were able to be widely communicated because of the recent development of printing, making written works much more available, first to the academic class; scholarsin the universities, and later to the merchant classes in the towns. Concepts of "individual"of self and individual rights emerged, which found expression in religious and political movements such as the followers of John Calvin and other Protestant sects in England, their Pilgrim cousins in North America, leading to such later political philosophers as Milton and John Locke and their adherents among the American and French revolutionary movements in the Eighteenth Century.
Strong Christian influence
The Renaissance was the time after the Dark Ages when new forms of music, literature, drama, and art began to be seen. Renaissance means 'new birth'. These began to affect people's lives in an uplifting manner. Joy was brought into their lives again as was fresh thinking. The Reformation was a continuation of these new ideas and emotions, prompting new ways to look at Scriptures which was part of everyone's lives back then. These influenced the Enlightenment by opening the way people thought about things instead of being confined in thought per the Catholic Church at the time. For the first time, philosophers could posit a world without God controlling every aspect of life.
Yes, we are the Society of Jesus, commonly known as the Jesuits. Founded by St. Ignatius Loyola in 1540, our mission was to spread the Catholic faith and counter the Protestant Reformation through education and intellectual engagement. We established schools and universities, emphasizing rigorous academic training combined with religious instruction. Our focus on education helped to restore Catholic influence and bring many back to the Catholic faith during that time.
