Before the Cree migrated into the plains, they would have eaten moose, beavers, deer, etc., basically animals that you can find in Ontario and that area.
After the Cree moved to the Plains, they relied most heavily upon buffalo. They also would have eaten prairie animals like deer, rabbits, etc.
I hope that helps!
Some of the most important foods in the Cree diet were corn, beans and squash. The Cree hunted, fished and trapped for meat. They hunted buffalo when they were abundant in the prairies, but as the buffalo disappeared, caribou, moose and deer gained greater significance in their diet. Other foods included pumpkins, blueberries, potatoes, and much more.
The Cree were essentially hunter-gatherers, not farmers. They obtained a varied diet from their natural habitat: eastern and central Cree groups hunted moose, goose, duck, deer and elk, they fished in rivers and lakes, collected berries, nuts and roots as well as large quantities of wild rice. Western bands (Plains Cree) hunted buffalo and other animals as the major element in their diet. No crops of any kind were grown.
The Cree tribe primarily engaged in a hunter-gatherer lifestyle, relying on hunting, fishing, and gathering wild plants for sustenance. They hunted various game, including deer and moose, and fished in the numerous lakes and rivers of their territory. While some Cree communities adopted agriculture later on, particularly in southern regions, traditional practices were predominantly centered around foraging and seasonal migration.

the plains cree had prairie land whereas the woodlands cree lived in a more lively habitat. The Plains Cree used to live in tepees and hunted mainly buffalo, much like the other neighboring plains nations; with the advent of the horse these Plains cultures flourished. Woodlands Cree lived in wigwams (conical structures) similar to the plains, but hunted moose, deer and fished. Woodland Cree commuted the rivers in canoes as a means of transport. There are also dialect differences with some Woodlands and Plains Cree. Also, the dialect of "Y" is used by the Plains Cree and some Woodlands Cree use the "TH" dialect. The Plains Cree also tend to speak in a more sedate (slower) manner and the northern Woodlands speak faster.
Identifying the most hunted animal depends on whether you mean hunted by humans or by predatory animals. Even then, sources disagree. Various sources report the deer is the most hunted animal, but some say quail, ducks, rabbits, or mice are the most hunted animals.

Like many animals being hunted, their fur might be in demand or some part of the animal could be of some value.
One important animal symbol of the Woodland Cree is the eagle. It is considered as the most sacred of birds. It is believed to carry prayers to the Creator.
