The superstitious belief about comets are that they bring bad luck. Others superstitious beliefs are that comets are attacks that are brought on by the heavens.

Short-term period comets originate in the Kuiper belt or it's "shattered disc", which is around the orbit of Neptune. Long-term period comets originate in Oort cloud, which is a cloud of icy bodies in space.
Bill Haley is really the only one I can think of by name, and he wasn't really a Comet himself; the band was billed as "Bill Haley and His Comets."
