Much of the soil wasn't good for growing crops, especially near the ocean. Tobacco farming was the main part of the economy. It was grown in what is now the Atlantic coastal plain area in Maryland. After a few years, the old tobacco fields lost vitamins and nutrients needed. They needed new fields. 80% of the land was plantations by the 1650's. Farmers in the middle colonies were the most prosperous of all they grew wheat, barley, oats, rye, and corn. The middle colonies were often called the "breadbasket" because they grew so much food. Still New England farmers often grew enough food to feed their families and maybe even help feed other families. Maryland has a good climate. It has mild winters, but warm summers, as well. Flourishing in the mild winters and hot summers of the coastal plains are typically southern trees like the pine and the magnolia, while the cooler uplands have woods of black and white oak. Maryland has nearly 3 million acres of forest land

Mountains in the west, rolling hills and seashore.
