Before its war of independence (1810-1821), present-day Mexico was known as the New Spain. It encompassed most of Central America (Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua and Costa Rica) as well as the present-day U.S. States of California, Nevada, Utah, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and parts of Colorado, Oklahoma, Kansas and Wyoming.
Within the New Spain, the "Audience of Mexico" (Spanish: Audiencia de Mexico) included parts of present-day Mexican states of Guerrero, Morelos, Hidalgo, Mexico City and Mexico State.
