Before European colonization, the region now known as New Hampshire was primarily inhabited by the Abenaki tribe, part of the larger Algonquian-speaking peoples. The Abenaki engaged in farming, hunting, and fishing, and they established villages along rivers and lakes. Other smaller tribes, such as the Pennacook, also lived in the area, contributing to the region's rich Indigenous culture. These tribes had a deep connection to the land, which played a central role in their way of life.
