The traditional feast of the camas bake is a tradition; camas bulbs are prepared, and steamed in an underground fire pit that has alder bark and skunk cabbage leaves placed on the camas bulbs, the pit is covered with dirt and water is poured down a hole to begin the steaming process. The camas bake was held on sept. 21, and traditional wakes are held when a tribal member dies, with food. Ceremonies are held that feature native dancing, stick games and horsemanship. One notable conflict involving the Flathead Indians was the Battle of the Bitterroot Valley in 1855. This confrontation arose as tensions escalated between the Flathead and white settlers encroaching on their lands. The Flatheads, seeking to protect their territory and resources, engaged in skirmishes with both settlers and U.S. government forces, reflecting the broader struggles of Native American tribes during westward expansion. Ultimately, the fight exemplified the challenges faced by the Flathead in preserving their way of life amidst increasing pressures from settlers.
