Originally they were Hitler's Personal Bodyguards. Eventually they came to fight on the front lines (D-Day 1944) and run the Nazi Concentration Camps.

Additional Answer

The SS was a large, and extremely complicated, organisation comprising many branches. The 'SS troops' of world war two, were known as the 'Waffen-SS' divisions and fought, under the tactical and strategic control of the German Army ('Heer'), on all fronts except North Africa. This particular organisation had nothing to do with guarding concentration camps, although one of its divisions was formed from members of the Totenkopfverband ('Deaths Head' formation) which, pre-war, was responsible for guarding the camps.
