The aim of The War on Terror was to capture Osama Bin Ladin, who many believed to be responsible for the September 11, 2001 attacks in the United States. In addition, steps were taken to protect citizens from another possible attack. Levels of terror were instituted to keep the public apprised of the probability of an attack. Various government agencies such as the NSA and TSA were established to provide additional security checks at airports and to detect possible terrorist attempts by surveillance of the internet as well as via telephone technology. Military operations were stepped up in Afghanistan, where US officials believed Bin Ladin was hiding. An amphibious operation by the Navy Seals, located and killed Bin Ladin, bringing to a close that chapter of the War on Terror.
