The first reason was labor...in a pre industrialized society, slaves performed many menial tasks allowing for their masters to have more leisure time. Contrary to what the PC spin doctors say, slavery was caused more by blacks enslaving fellow blacks than the white man enslaving blacks because why should the whites risk the dangerous hinterlands when they could hire black slavers to collect the needed number of slaves.

The second major reason came to be when the Industrial Age emerged. Under such a scenario, slave labor is no longer a viable enterprise (No, the UK didn't free its slaves out of the goodness of their hearts.), but raw materials are now the important commodity. Africa was a massive source of raw materials, so those with the most colonies gained a primary advantage over those with less. (This situation was one of the later flashpoints that eventually became WW I)

The third reason is a bit less exact in its explanation, but this came to be in the Post WW II era. The colonial empires were falling apart as a resurgent nationalism resulted in independence of many of the former colonies. The new focus became economic in scope; the raw materials from Africa were still needed, but now it was suitable to deal with the former colonies for what they had versus simply stealing it.
