Tiberius was a reluctant emperor. He liked to keep out of politics and state administration. Prior to his becoming emperor he had been a great military commander. However suddenly withdrew from politics and retired to Rhodes. He also distanced himself from politics after four years into his reign, having yearly stays in Campania (to the south of Rome) and after twelve years the retired to the island of Capri. When his son died, he did not try to find a heir. He delegated most state affairs to Sejanus, the head of the imperial guard. Sejanus plotted to overthrow Tiberius. The plot was found out and Sejanus was executed. Tiberius then instituted a series of treason trials. After this he withdrew from Rome completely.
