the Japanese were so well dug in tunnels all over the island.
Yes, there is in fact a battle just like D-day. I assume you are refering to the D-day that took place at Normandy, but there was another exactly alike that took place at Iwo-Jima. Iwo Jima was an isolated island that was controlled by Japan. Everything was basically the same, althought I think the battle of Normandy took place before the battle of Iwo Jima. Although Normandy was a bigger, bloodier battle and is more known to people when you refer to D-day,and Iwo Jima was just as important to yet another win for the Allies during WW2. If you want to learn more about Iwo Jima, read the book "Flags of our fathers". It is pretty interesting and engaging.

The Battle of the Thames also known as the Battle of Moraviantown, took place in Ontario, Canada on 5-Oct-1813.
The Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II was fought between the United States and Japan. It took place from February 19 to March 26, 1945, and was a crucial battle in the Pacific Theater as U.S. forces sought to capture the island, which was vital for air operations. The fierce combat resulted in significant casualties on both sides, with the U.S. ultimately securing the island.
It only took a couple of months to get buildings put up and the airfield made once the Marines and Army reached the airfield of the Japanese. They started resurfacing the airfield at Iwo Jima long before the Japanese were defeated on that island. The Sea Bees were being shot at while they worked on the field. So they managed to get it done within a week or more. There were pilots who landed on that airfield doing emergency landings before they totally completed that runway.
The Battle of Iwa Jima
There were no civilians on the island of Iwo Jima when the battle took place. They were all evacuated in 1944 to mainland Japan.

The battle of Hastings took place in 1066. :)
After the Americans took over Iwo Jima, the Japanese had nothing left to them but Retreat. They took all the military force they had and went back to the closest base to Iwo Jima. Though the battle ended officially on March 26th, the Japanese surrendered on the 16th, but resistance remained until the 26th. 1,000 of the survivors were taken prisoner, while the remaining 1,000 or so went to the nearest base.
The battle took place over two days.
