Iwo Jima is famouse because of the long, hard and deadly battles that were fought between the Allies and Japanese soldiers, naval people and the marines. It is considered one of the bloodiest battles of World War Two. It would take me a long time to explain all the details of the battles of IWO JIMA so I am adding some links so you can read the extremely lengthy details. Two of the six men, Mike Strank and Harlon Block, died about a week later during battle on Iwo Jima. Another, Franklin Sousley, died about a month later on Iwo Jima. The surviving three, John "Doc" Bradley, Ira Hayes and Rene Gagnon were sent on a War Bond tour to raise money for the U.S. Marines during World War II once the picture became famous. Ira died in 1955 under mysterious circumstances. Rene died of a heart attack in 1979. John lived to be the ripe old age of 70 before he died from complications of a stroke and heart disease in 1994.

No American soldiers were awarded the Medal of Honor for the battle of Iwo Jima, largely because no American soldiers fought the battle of Iwo Jima. (Marines get really mad if you call them soldiers, and Iwo Jima was a Marine action.) Twenty-three Marines and four sailors earned the Medal of Honor for this battle. Fourteen of the Medals were earned posthumously--the recipient died doing his heroic action. Only eighty-two Marines earned the Medal in all of World War II.

The Battle of Iwo Jima was is based on 5 marines and a Navy Corpsman, whom were responsible for raising the on Iwo Jima. The two stories are very similar as Flags of Our Fathers is based on a true story.

The two Iwo Jima memorial statues are located in different places. The original statue, depicting the famous flag-raising by U.S. Marines, is part of the Marine Corps War Memorial in Arlington, Virginia, near Arlington National Cemetery. The second replica is located in Iwo Jima, Japan, on the site of the historic battle.

There are two reasons why America wanted to capture Iwo Jima. There were two airstrips on Iwo Jima and the Americans could use those to land broken B-29's that needed repairing. The other reason is that If the Americans are going to bomb japan, Iwo Jima would inform the main land of Japan and form a counter-strike. It was mandatory for the americans to take Iwo Jima, because if they didn't Hiroshima and Nagasaki would have been failures.
