The Iwo Jima Memorial, officially known as the Marine Corps War Memorial, commemorates the bravery and sacrifice of U.S. Marines who fought in the Battle of Iwo Jima during World War II. The statue depicts the iconic moment of six Marines raising the American flag on Mount Suribachi, symbolizing hope and resilience. Unveiled in 1954, it serves as a tribute to all Marines who have served and continue to serve in defense of the nation.
Based on the equally famous World War II photograph taken soon after the actual incident, the famous 'Iwo Jima statue' represents the capturing of Mt. Suribachi -- the highest point on the island of Iwo Jima -- by American Marines. More largely, the statue is dedicated to all those Marines who have died in defense of their country since 1775.
