Some things are nearly precisely the same. The Roman Catholic Church still conducts some services in Latin, and if people of the Middle Ages were put into them, they might recognize a difference in decoration and music, but they would know exactly what was going on. And in many places, people worship in the same churches their ancestors did more than 600 or 1000 years ago.
There are even countries that have the same governments they had in the Middle Ages. Andorra has two princes who rule simultaneously, a situation that has existed since the Middle Ages; one is the Bishop of Urgell, and the other is the head of state of France. Things are not exactly the same, however, because France now has a president instead of a king. So every time the French elect a new president, they also elect a new Prince of Andorra.
Some things are very different. Most (but not all) medieval people would have thought the idea of putting hops in beer was weird, and they would have found the beer much more heavily carbonated than anything they were used to. But many wines would have been very similar to those we have today.
They ate many of the same things we do, but not all. In the Middle Ages they did not have tomatoes or potatoes, but they did have peas, lentils, and turnips. They did not have maize, or new world corn, but they did have oats, barley, and wheat. They had pea soup with bacon, and they had white bread. They had stew made with chicken, turnips, carrots, and onions. They had meat pastries and fruit pastries, and (sorry, George Washington) they even had apple pie. They had Swiss cheese, and they had Cheddar cheese, though they had no country that would to claim to produce both. Europeans did not have Chinese takeouts in those days, but they did have prepared meals because most people in towns and cities did not cook for themselves. They had candy; the difference was that they were much more likely than we are to be eating marzipan, but they had no chocolate at all.
They had schools, though many modern people do not know it. There is a record of Cor Tewdws, a school in Wales that operated for the entire period of the Middle Ages. The King's School, in Canterbury, has been operating since 597 AD, and there are over seventy other schools from the Middle Ages that remain open today. In addition to these, there were universities in the Middle Ages, starting in 1088. And, just as there sometimes are today, there were student strikes.
They had people who loved each other, and they had people who were greedy and hateful, just as we do. They had people who were imaginative, just as we do. And they had people who were ignorant and narrow minded, just as we do.
