The French and Indian War began because of the American colonists and the French colonists both wanting to move into the area west of the Appalachian Mtns. Since the colonists wanted to farm there and the French wanted to fur trap, they could not coexist in the same area. So pretty much, the French and their Native American allies fought against Britain, the American colonists, and their Native American allies.
The French felt that they had a superior claim to the lands of the Ohio Valley, especially the territories that are now part of western Pennsylvania. The French leaders in Quebec sent military parties to discourage the Indians from trading with the British in the region. Finally, in 1753, the French built forts in the area and were challenged by the British colonial militia under George Washington. Hostilities erupted on July 3, 1754, after a massacre of some French by Indians they had previously attacked. Washington was forced to surrender and withdraw, and soon both sides were sending reinforcements to fight in Pennsylvania and ultimately in Canada. Indian tribes were allied with both sides, with the French supported by those whose land was imperiled by the British expansion into the interior.By war's end in 1763, the French lost Canada and the majority of their New World empire to the British, but they would get their revenge by aiding the colonials in the Revolutionary War, only fifteen years later.they were fighting over land

The French and Indian war was actually a conflict between France and Britain. Both countries wanted to establish a stronger power in the 'New World', specifically in the area of the Ohio Territories. Native American Indians allied with the British in the conflict, which is how the name came to be.

Britain gained all French territory in North America as a result of them winning the French and Indian War. However, the largest French territory, Louisiana, was ceded to Spain before the end of the war to prevent the British take over of the territory. So in reality, Spain and the UK were still battling for power in the Americas as France was only left with its territory of Haiti in the Caribbean. Spain had more land area than Britain but lost its power in the 1800s when all its territory became independent. Britain remains in the Americas even 'til today.

The Ohio River Valley was contested by France and Great Britain prior to the French and Indian War (or 7 Years War as it was known it Europe). This region west of the Appalacian Mountains offered great conditions for the trapping of beavers for pelts which had grown popular throughout Europe. In addition, the area also had lots of wildlife which made it desirable.
