The Battle of Hastings - 14th October 1066. King Harold II (the Saxon ruler) was defeated by the invading William II of Normandy.
The battle was fought at Senlac Ridge, now located in the town of Battle (named after the famous conflict). It's about 6.5 miles northwest of the coastal town of Hastings, East Sussex, United Kingdom.
The site is marked by Battle Abbey, built by William II, also known as William the Conqueror.
They abbey's construction is said to have been undertaken by William as an act of penance for the blood shed during the battle.
