On October 23, 1944, Field Marshall Albert Kesselring, the commander of the German forces in Italy, was traveling under blackout conditions through heavy fog when his car collided with a towed artillery piece. General Kesselring was gravel injured and taken to the nearest hospital at Ferrara where he remained for several months. This necessitated a change in command but it occurred during the end of the Fall campaign in the North Appennine Mountains. General Vietinghoff took over as commander and General Lemelsen moved from XIV Army to X Army and General von Senger und Etterlin transferred to command the XIV Army. Custermen
