Private John Starbird had been caught leaving ranks of the 19th Massachusetts Regiment. He was tried, and on May 21, 1864 General George Meade approved his execution by firing squad. Since Meade's army was on the move, there was no time for the usual practice of massing the division to which Starbird belonged to witness his death, Starbird was quickly executed and his laid near a road where all passing regiments would see his body.
