America was a target due to a strong military that they intended to destroy and we have resources and land not available to Japan. Us Americans had been giving Japan many resources they needed as they took over countries around them, but we noticed this and stoped giving them resources and i think they got mad and well there you go. The cause for this dreadful event is that as WWII went on, President Roosevelt decided that we should no longer trade and help Japan, so we cut off their supply of oil, and we limited our trading with them. since Japan was a growing empire, for them, trade was important, or was another reason for survival. Not only that, they felt "entitled" to the Hawaiian Islands, so that was a reason they sought. the boycotting of goods and trade did not please the Japanese at all. On December 7, 1941, the event of the bombing of Pearl Harbor happened.

In simple terms the Japanese mainland island did not have any of the necessary Natural Resources needed to run a modern country such as oil, mineral deposits and other natural products. So they purchased their oil from the United States and other countries. They had to purchase everything they needed. They wanted their own land with the resources and they wanted to rule other lands (some people don't agree with this but most do). So they invaded China's Manchuria region and other places. They had their minds intent on going to the Dutch East Indies in South East Asia. But they knew the US Navy would go after them if they went there. They decided they must stop the US Navy in its tracks. They had a negotiator in Washington DC discussing the conflict that had led to the US placing an oil embargo on Japan (after they murdered people in China and took their natural resources). So while the negotiator was speaking with President Roosevelt the Japanese Navy attacked Pearl Harbor without the declaration of war being given to the US. So it was a malicious attack. When FDR heard about the attack he was furious with the Japanese delegate. The next day Congress and FDR declared war on Japan. Days later Adolf Hitler declared war on the USA.
