Humans do not enjoy seeing anyone or anything suffer. It is my belief that humans tend to be afraid of that in which they are unfamiliar with or simply ignorant of. Most white individuals of the day were blissfully ignorant of the plight of African Americans. If they do not see the struggle, then (in their mind) the struggle does not exist.
The Civil Rights Movement brought the problem to the attention of the average American. Once awakened to the issue, many demanded that equality be metered out to all citizens.
Like many issues, familiarity with the situation takes away many scarey aspects of that situation. When people find out that they are all fairly close to the same, the fear disappears.
