The largest church buildings were the cathedrals.

Of these, there were several that were very impressive and famous. One is St. Peter's Basilica, in Rome, which is presided over by the Pope. Another very famous one was the Hagia Sophia, the main cathedral of the Eastern Orthodox Church, in Constantinople, though this was later turned into a mosque.

A number of cathedrals are famous for their beautiful architecture. One is Notre Dame de Paris. Another (one of my personal favorites) is Salisbury Cathedral in Salisbury, England.
