Mao had paranoiac hatred of any country which threatened to dominate China imperially; these included Japan, the USA, Britain, France, and the Soviet Union. This did not, however, stop him from securing alliances of convenience with nations that he feared. For the most part, state diplomacy during the Mao period was handled by his Premier, Zhou Enlai, and Mao focused primarily on domestic policy (with some exceptions, such as his aggressive support of Chinese involvement in the Korean War).
