He wanted to attack it to have an ally. OK, you can ask to that: "but why didn't he think of the winter?"<- That was because he originally wanted to attack it in spring, and when he gets to Moscow, he was hoping, that the Russians will give up. But(!!!) because of Italy attacking Greece and Yugoslavia starting to rise up against him, he wanted to settle those countries, then attack the Soviet Union. It was June by then, and he thought he could still occupy the Soviet Union. But he was wrong!!! But he could still make a couple of changes by the borders, and he surrounded Leningrad and Stalingrad.
