It came form England Scotland and Northern Ireland; however it is originally from Normandy and for all ethnic purposes would be considered French. Roger De Montgomery was a Norman (French) nobleman, he helped to plan the invasion of England in 1066. The first recorded spelling of the family name comes from the Domesday book of Staffordshire and was written as "Hugo de Montgomeri", and was dated 1086. The name is originally derived from ancient castle of Saint Foi de Montgomery in the diocese of Lisieux, Normandy, or from St. Germain de Montgomery in Calvados.
