Nachos are claimed as both an American and a Mexican dish. "Nacho" was the nickname of the cook who invented Nachos. In 1943, he was working in the Victory Club restaurant in Piedras Negras, Mexico (across the border from Eagle Pass, Texas), when he invented the snack for a group that came in to eat when his supplies were low and there wasn't much left in the kitchen to cook with. However, his version was not like the ones that are sold in the U.S. In 1977, Frank Liberto changed the original recipe, using tortilla chips to make it easier to eat as snack food, in Arlington Stadium in Arlington, Texas. Howard Cosell, a famous sports reporter, liked both the food and the name, and the snack took off in popularity in the United States.
