His attempts to invade the country in the late 13th century were thwarted by strong resistance from the samurai and, notably, by typhoons that destroyed his fleet, famously referred to as "kamikaze" or divine winds. These failed invasions in 1274 and 1281 marked significant setbacks for his expansionist ambitions.
