The 1960s.

US involvement in South Vietnam became prominent with the assassination of deposed President Diem in 1963 (just 20 days before President Kennedy was killed). The US had implied to the coup leaders that they did not oppose a regime change. In 1965, US troops were deployed during the militarily-backed presidency of Nguyen Van Thieu. By 1968, pressure to end the war mounted, but it was not until 1973 that the US concluded a treaty with the North and withdrew. Few in the US, even in anti-war circles, accepted Nixon's claim that it was "peace with honor."
