Alexander Stephens was a US Congressman from Georgia. In a manner of speaking he had a friendship with Abraham Lincoln. Stephens was a man of vision and saw that succession would be a disaster for the South. He understood the outrage in Georgia when Abraham Lincoln won the presidential election.Stephens, like Lincoln were constitutional bound, and both men agreed that the US Constitution provided protections for the South. He spoke before the Georgia at the state capital to voice his opinions in the dangers of secession. He also warned that by no means should the South take up arms against the US. His speech was covered by the European press. Georgia, however, did not take Stephens words very well. He was like a man lost in the wilderness. Later, Jefferson Davis would have Stephens as his vice president.
