However, that all changed in on July 4, 1776 when the United States declared independence from Great Britain. No longer where they OK with being colonies: they wanted to become an independent nation. The Declaration states that the colonies "are and of right ought to be free and independent states" and that "all political connection between them and the state of Great Britain is and ought to be totally dissolved."
